An MRI that I thought should have cost $1000 ended up over 4 grand last year, and all my appeals were denied despite evidence to the contrary that the provider's price was way out of line.
Contracted rates with in network providers are considered proprietary, meaning only the provider can release the information. This helps in competition between providers.
