I'm trying to get help losing weight, why isn't weight watchers eligible on my HSA card. I'm a diabetic & need to lose some weight, sensibly
Thanks for reaching out to us regarding your Health Spending Account.
I am sorry for the inconvenience, however you are unable to use your HSA card to directly pay provider Weight Watchers. Unfortunately, the bank code listed for their account shows they are registered as a Direct Marketing - Continuity/Subscription Merchant. There are parameters set on the HSA cards to deny charges to providers that are not listed as medical, dental, vision or pharmacy type businesses.
However, you do have the option to request reimbursement from your HSA account for those services. You can request reimbursement through your www.Humanaaccess.com account page under the BILL PAY function.
We suggest that you check with a financial or tax advisor to confirm that the expense is IRS allowable to avoid any IRS penalties. Per the IRS.gov website under Publication 502:
You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay to lose weight if it is a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease). This includes fees you pay for membership in a weight reduction group as well as fees for attendance at periodic meetings.
You can't include the cost of diet food or beverages in medical expenses because the diet food and beverages substitute for what is normally consumed to satisfy nutritional needs. You can include the cost of special food in medical expenses only if:
1.The food doesn't satisfy normal nutritional needs,
2.The food alleviates or treats an illness, and
3.The need for the food is substantiated by a physician.
I hope you find this information helpful.
